The second round of the Botswana Fibre Network (BOFINet) Softball League resumes after the festive break but the log leaders are ill- prepared.

Gaosikelwe told Mmegi Sport that only a few players pitched up for training, which was expected to start last week. She said most of the players are college students and have not returned from holidays.

Gaosikelwe said it is common that during this time of the season, players return late from holidays and there is nothing much they can do.

Despite the setback, she is hopeful of a better player turnout when they take on BMC tomorrow. “The transfer window is open and we might consider roping in new players. At the moment, we have secured the services of Kabelo Moesi from Comets. We might lose some players because in softball, teams negotiate with a player before approaching a club. The sport has no money and it is easy for clubs to convince players,” Gaosikelwe said.

Dinare is leading the women’s league with eight points after five matches. It has won four matches and lost once. Wells is second with the same number of points followed by BDF IX. University of Botswana Giants is at the bottom of the log after losing all its first round matches.

Wells’ team manager, Ontafetse Batsetswe said their preparations have been going well despite the festive break. He said the aim is for the team to win the women league and they want to beef the squad by two more players.

In the men’s league, Dinare is in third position with eight points. BDF IX is leading the pack with 12 points followed by Wells with eight.

The competition is expected to be tough this season with every team eyeing the lucrative P100,000 first prize from BOFINet who sponsor the league with P1 million.

Fixtures for Saturday matches in the Southern Zone: Blue Angels versus Wells (men), Panthers versus Wells (women). In the afternoon, Panthers men will take on Wells while Blue Angels will face off against Gatalamotho. On Sunday: UB Giants versus Vikings (women). UB men will tackle Vikings. All matches will be played at the National Diamond in Gaborone.
