Standard One pupil dies after being hit by a car

Confirming the accident, Wednesday, Palapye police Assistant Station Commander, Mothokomedi Ponyane said it was reported to them on Monday around 12 noon.

“It is true that we are investigating a case in which a six-year-old girl from Kediretswe Primary School was hit and killed by a Fortuna car.  “We are still not sure of what might have exactly transpired for the accident to happen, but I can say that we are currently detaining a middle aged man who was driving the car to help us with investigations,” said Ponyane.

According to the assistant station commander, the small girl was on her way from school to home when she met her fate. Ponyane also added that the accident happened not far from District Health Team (DHT) offices in Serorome ward along the tarred road.

Meanwhile, Ponyane said that though they have recorded fewer such accidents since last years, motorists should be careful of pedestrians, especially young school going children.

“I also advice drivers to always reduce speed whenever they pass where they know that there are pupils,” advised Ponyane.

Kediretswe Primary School, School head, who declined to be identified, also confirmed the accident. He urged drivers to avoid talking on their cell phones while driving.

He said that this is a very worrying issue, which in most cases causes a lot of accidents since the drivers will be concentrating on the cell phones.

He also advised parents to be responsible for their children by always dropping them off at school and coming to fetch them after school. He said that these days Standard One students are admitted to schools at a very young age hence they need extra care and support from their parents.

According to the school head, the deceased originated from Mopipi Village and the funeral will be held on Saturday at her home village.
