Segokgo to consult youth struggling in business

The purpose of the meeting is to find ways to assist the youth with their businesses and help them find new markets.
The planned meeting comes after the council learnt that some youth owe total loan arrears of P527,718.14 for the whole district.
South East district chairperson, Phenyo Segokgo, said in an interview with Mmegi that the consultative meeting would be held on Thursday.
“Our aim is to help out the youth after the consultative meeting with council officials. They will meet with district councillors. We also want to establish the problems that our youth might be facing in their businesses,” Segokgo said.
He emphasised that they realise the lack of support from local and central governments to be some of the factors that lead to the collapse of youth businesses.
He said: “Our council has taken a resolution to support and empower our youth, but government procedures will be followed.”
He added that there has been an outcry that some factors are inconsistent with reducing unemployment among the youth in the district.
“One hundred and sixty-six youth have been funded under this programme with only 96 projects operational. Non-commitment by beneficiaries on the Youth Development Fund continues to be a challenge hence quite a number of the projects funded under this programme have collapsed,” he said, adding that there are ambiguities leading to poor coordination systems by the central government to harness procurement laws for the benefit of young people.
He also said some challenges youth in business face include high rentals and non-repayment of loans by beneficiaries due to those systematic problems.
