BCP Women�s League hosts WAFA meeting

The events will be staged under the aegis of BCP Women’s League from Thursday.
The WAFA is a non-governmental organisation whose sole aim is to promote gender equality as well as empowerment and political advancement of women in Africa.
“Conscious of the role that women play in political processes and the need to improve their participation and representation in the decision making processes within political parties, governments, regional and international political systems, the mission of WAFA is to educate women on the ideology and principles of social democracy and the empowerment of African women with leadership tools to be active and meaningful participants across all political spectrums,” said WAFA deputy secretary general and BCP member Daisy Bathusi.
“The Botswana WAFA workshop is a key deliverable in the history of the organisation, as it is here in Botswana where we will be rolling out our four year training and development programme.
“We will be training 16 trainers, four from each region of Africa, with the exception of North Africa, where we are still to have members.
“Our target is to have trained at least 1,500 women throughout our member parties by 2017.”
WAFA was founded in 2009 in Accra, Ghana by the following political parties: Botswana Congress Party (BCP), The Socialist Democratic Front (SDF), Cameroon, Social Democratic Party (SDP), Uganda, Chama Cho Mapinduzi (CCM), Tanzania, Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), Zimbabwe, Movement For Democratic Change T (MDC T), Zimbabwe, African National Congress (ANC), South Africa, Frente de Libertacao de Mozambique (FRELIMO), Mozambique, National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ghana, and Convention People’s Party (CPP), Ghana.
Bathusi said WAFA is sponsored and supported by the Labour Party of UK and the Westminster Foundation for Democracy.
WAFA membership is limited to Women’s leagues of political parties that subscribe to socialist and social democratic political ideology only and currently the membership comprises of 15 political parties in Africa.
WAFA executive committee was elected in London in 2013 for a four-year term.
