Tribal staff in Mochudi get new offices

Acting director of Tribal Administration in the Ministry of Local Government, Tumelo Seboko told Mmegi yesterday that the offices cost about P2 million to construct and will be ready for use by the end of next month. He said the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) was awaiting payment to connect electricity to the new, albeit temporary offices constructed by Tim Botswana. The tribal administration workers in Mochudi have been operating from tents for months after their dilapidated colonial era office block was declared unfit for use by the Department of Buildings and Electrical Services (DBES). Every working day, they shift equipment and furniture from the old offices which they use as a store to their workstations at the tents and back.
Last April, they boycotted the offices after DBES condemned the premises as a danger to human health. They sat outside the offices and only entered when they served people.
At the time, Seboko, acknowledged the existence of the DBES warning but said he could not force employees to use the offices. During a Kgotla meeting addressed by deputy chief Bana Sekai Linchwe, the tribe said that the staff should vacate the offices.
