Father rapes five year-old daughter

“The grandmother told us that the young man asked her to allow his daughter to visit him for a few days as he wanted to spend time with her. She agreed but was disturbed when she noticed that the child was not her usual self, upon her return,” the station commander said.

Setale said the grandmother examined the child because she suspected that she had been sexually assaulted. In the company of other family members, the grandmother confronted the father, who reportedly caved in and admitted to having raped his daughter.

“The young man has also confessed the crime to us. He blamed his actions on alcohol,” Setale said. He added that the accused would appear before the Mochudi Magistrate Court on January 19.

In other incidents, Setale said the Kgatleng District capital was calm over the festive season. He said they had recorded a reduction in criminal offences, compared to the same period last year.

He said Mochudi Police recorded five rape cases compared to seven the previous year. They recorded one store break-in compared to four the previous festive, and five day house break-ins compared to nine last year.  Night break-ins however increased to four from one over the previous period. The police station also recorded seven cases of unlawful injuring, compared to four in the previous period, as well as 12 cases of stocktheft, which represented a 100 percent increase over the previous period.

Officer Commanding Kgatleng District Senior Superintendent Seabe Maboka concurred that revellers were generally well behaved over the festive season, compared to disorderly behaviour characterised in the previous seasons. In 2013, police deployed tear gas on an unruly crowd at Masakeng Bar at the Notwane shopping complex, as festive season revelry went out of control.

Maboka further stated four fatal road traffic accidents were recorded this year, compared to one in 2014. In one of the incidents, two males lost their lives on Christmas Day when two vehicles collided in Sikwane. On December 26, 2014, another man lost his life in an accident along the Mochudi/Sikwane road. A pedestrian also died after being hit by a vehicle along the Mochudi/Phaphane road.

A total of 22 road accidents were recorded, a decline from 27 in 2013. Maboka said 422 traffic offences were recorded in 2014, which was an increase from the 337 recorded the previous year.
