Office Commanding No 10 District, Senior Superintendent Takongwa Mazwiduma said the boy was with his grandmother and peers when the incident occurred. It was reported that the young boys pursued the snake to its burrow, before it turned and struck the deceased, who died on the spot. The boy and his grandmother were part of the group that had camped in the Bobirwa area to harvest mophane worms. He was buried last weekend in Kgagodi village.

Meanwhile, No10 District, which consists of five police stations, recorded no fatalities on the roads for the second year running during the festive season. Mazwiduma said only minor accidents were recorded. He declared that Selebi-Phikwe registered only three cases of house breaking compared to eight cases registered in Bobonong.

In a separate incident, police have arrested one suspect in a case in which robbers used explosives to rob Pep Stores in Selebi-Phikwe during the holidays and made away with undisclosed amount of cash.

Part of the money and a stash of explosives were recovered from the arrested suspect. He appeared before the Magistrate Court last Friday and is due for another appearance on January 14.

While the other suspects are still at large, police are doing their best to arrest them, according to station commander Victor Nlebesi.

Nlebesi further said they are worried that the suspects may have more explosives in their possession that they could use to commit other crimes. He also said they are working on establishing the source of explosives because they are not licensed to carry them.“We are also hoping for a breakthrough in unresolved cases of store breaking where similar explosives were used in Sefalana and Mmadinare Furniture Mart,” he added.

The police have since deployed a team of officers, who are working with other law enforcement agencies across the country to bring the suspects to book.
