Yesterday, Mahalapye police station commander, Amos Kekgathetse said they arrested eight suspects who were questioned and released as investigations continue after the fatal stabbing. He said they are still following leads and hoped to make more arrests soon. “We arrested eight suspects and released them. Two were later re-arrested as new information came to light,” he said.

Kekgathetse said after questioning, one suspect was released while another remained in custody. “For now we have one suspect in custody but we expect to arrest more soon,” he said.

The deceased policeman, 41-year-old Mogakolodi Sebetlele, was buried on Sunday at his home village of Maokane. He was a 22-year veteran of the police service.

Kekgathetse dismissed reports doing the rounds in the village to the effect that the murdered policeman was on-duty at the time of his death. “We can only say he was on stand-by because police officers are never totally off duty. He was from a night of partying when he was murdered,” the station commander said.

Police believe their murdered colleague was involved in a fight with other revellers, during which he was stabbed with a sharp instrument. The incident happened on Christmas eve at a popular concert.
