From his initial appointment as Police constable in 1960 until his retirement as Vice President in 2012 General Merafhe remained a model public servant whose various contributions to Botswana’s progress will be remembered for generations to come.

For now our condolences and prayers go out to Mrs. Merafhe and other members of the Merafhe family in their time of loss. May his soul rest in peace.

'Our country and the Merafhe family have lost a great patriot and son of our soil. In this moment of unparalleled grief, I wish to convey my sincere condolences to Lt. General Mompati Merafhe's family and indeed the whole nation. I am keeping his family and the nation in my prayers during this period of profound sadness. In our mourning, we must also celebrate a life of distinguished servitude our former Vice President Rre Merafhe dedicated to the civil service and politics. His principled political journey is an inspiration to us all. Let us all honor him by continuing our efforts at building an even better republic, the kind of which builders of Botswana such as Lt. Gen. Merafhe lay foundations for. May His Soul Rest in Peace.'
