Police looking for mother of burnt child

Station Commander, Superintendent Moses Makgoeng told Mmegi they were working around the clock to find the mother of the infant, which “could be about nine-months old”.

“We received a call in the morning of New Year from people who had suspicions that what they saw in a pit was a child,” he said.

The villagers who witnessed the ghastly sight had gone to collect firewood in a nearby bush.

Makgoeng said no arrests have been made, but investigations continue.

Makgoeng further said they believed the crime was committed on New Year’s Eve.

“We believe the crime was committed on New Year’s Eve, as the child was still fresh when we arrived. For now we can confirm that the child had burns and we are not sure if the child was burnt alive or if he was killed first then burnt. We hope the post mortem will give us answers,” he said.

While the police say they are looking for the mother of the infant, word is that she is known in the village, but has since disappeared.
