The first edition was held in 2001 and since then the event has recorded tremendous growth. Defence and Security Minister Shaw Kgathi never misses the event held in his constituency.

The tournament draws participants from the villages of Mabolwe, Semolale and Gobojango. Masebola who organises the event originates from one of the villages, Semolale.

Every year, the youth participating in the event go to camp on December 24 till January 2. During the camp, the participants stay at the venue of the tournament  )Gobojango Juniour Secondary School). Masebola said food is provided by all the participating teams and the P60,000 from MVA proved handy. He said he started the tournament to assist government in its endeavour to fight crime and alcohol and drugs abuse by the youth during the festive season.

He also wanted to stop the youth from travelling too much during the festive season to avoid road accidents.
