BONA covets foreign coach

Botswana was awarded the rights to host the event ahead of its bid rival, Cook Islands.

Recently, BONA sent teams to the African Union Sports Council Region Five Youth Games in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and a youthful senior team to the Nations Cup in Singapore.

Both teams brought home bronze medals, a feat Lebotse-Sebego hailed and believes points to a bright future. The core of the team that will represent the country in 2017 should be drawn from those two teams. At least 18 of the players who took part in the two competitions will still be eligible for the World Youth Netball Championships, an Under-21 tournament in two years’ time.

Lebotse-Sebego is of the view that a well-qualified foreign coach could bring the best out of the team.

The BONA boss has challenged her executive saying there is no time to rest on their laurels as the work towards 2017 and the future starts now.

“I am excited because the team in Zimbabwe also won bronze as well as the ones in Singapore. But we have a lot of work to do technically,” she said.

Lebotse-Sebego is particularly delighted that six of the players who featured at the Singapore tournament were making their debuts.

Teenage starlets Sarona Hans and Boikanyo Selogetso were the youngest players on tour. Hans played Wing Defence in the PNG match.

Their Africa Youth Games teammates like Tara Matija, who captained the AYG team, will also join them as the most experienced players for the 2017 team.

“Six players, which is half of the squad, were playing for the first time in the national team, this is outstanding. I am especially excited that this time my technical team did not hesitate to include a player who is 16 years old,” said Lebotse-Sebego.
