Two children drown in Mmadiphiri River

Acting Station Commander Assistant Superintendent, Othusitse Zikhale said his office received a report of drowning on Saturday morning and they went to the scene and managed to retrieve the bodies. “The victims were in the company of their 51-year-old father when the Toyota Hilux they were traveling in got stuck in the middle of the river.

“A high density of water flow as a result of the rains that fell earlier caught up with them and overpowered them,” he said.

Zikhale said the incident happened between 7:00 and 8:00 pm. The bodies of the boys were taken to Mmadinare Hospital mortuary and transferred to Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital for post mortem on Tuesday.

In a separate incident, the Botshabelo Customary Court sentenced a 30-year-old mother to one-year imprisonment wholly suspended for two years, after she abandoned her two month-old twin babies in the house the whole night.

Zikhale said the mother left the twin babies and went on a ‘night out’ until their father discovered the babies when he knocked off in the morning.
