Mojuta plans blueprint for Phikwe

Speaking during a recent full council meeting, Mojuta said he would formulate the plan in consultation with the executive committee. The road map would be revealed to councillors during the first ordinary full council meeting next year.

In his acceptance speech after election, Mojuta urged councillors to consider investing part of their earnings to augment their salaries as they continue to advocate for improved pay. He said investing in shares would avert situations where councillors retire into poverty. He said dividends from the shares councillors would have accrued at the end of a councillor’s term to boost his or her financial stability.

“Our salaries may be low but it should not deter us from delivering on our mandate as councillors. Let us seriously consider investment opportunities as we continue to advocate for improved salaries so that we are also seen to be doing something,” he added.

Mojuta who was elected unopposed said the time has come for political party affiliations to be set aside and a sense of seriousness to prevail as the community of Selebi-Phikwe expects a lot from councilors.

“It takes a responsible leader to draw a line between a Freedom Square atmosphere and council. I appeal to you to be loyal to the promises you made during campaigns and deliver your promises to the people. We must also try to be different for us to leave a legacy behind,” he appealed.

The major called on the councillors to work together and consider the administrative wing as an integral part of the council. He said the political wing should appreciate that the administration wing forms part of the electorate who voted them into power.

“Appreciate that these officers are also voters who influenced your being here today. Officers must also view councillors as key stakeholders hence they must be assisted accordingly because they are responsible leaders,” he said.

The mayor said the orientation session that has been ongoing has undoubtedly moulded councillors to better understand the council procedures and encouraged them to take the knowledge they acquired seriously for the betterment of the town. “Let us go out there and be creative on how to develop Selebi-Phikwe,” Mojuta said. He added that his council will form a strong partnership with key  stakeholders such as BCL, SPEDU and BOCCIM.

Meanwhile, Molefhi Pilane was also elected unopposed as deputy mayor. Councillor Moses Serite was elected Leader of the House, Gaopalelwe Letsobe is Chief Whip while Molefhe Molatlhegi retained his position as the Leader of the Opposition.
