Lesole tops local producers

Lesole has steadily climbed up the music ladder and is now a force to reckon with in terms of music production.  Some of the big names that have passed through Lesole’s skilled hands include Afro Jazz songstresses Punah Gabasiane, Kearoma Ranto and Nnunu Ramogotsi.  Other household names include Benson Phuthego, Lizibo, KTM Choir and Uri.

He is quick to point out that he also cherishes opportunities to unearth hidden talent.

Lesole who is also a gospel musician, cut his teeth during his days at David ‘Skizo’ Molosi’s production company, which he joined in 2006 after he completed his tertiary education. Lesole who was born and raised in Kanye, believes music has always been a calling for him.  His father was a prolific songwriter and this seems to have rubbed off on him and his siblings who have demonstrated some musical inclination.  “I didn’t have a choice, it came naturally to me.  Music is like my purpose in life,” he said. “It is just a talent that I have.  Music and church are one thing,” he said.  Ironically Lesole has never studied music production.  It just came as a God-given talent to him.

However, he credits Skizo for nurturing his raw talent and showing him through the ropes.

“I want to grow bigger than what I am,” he said about his ambitions.   Lesole’s skills have not gone unnoticed, as he has won several awards. In 2012 he bagged the Botswana Musicians Union (BOMU) award for ‘Best Male Artist’ and ‘Best Producer’.   He also clinched the Best-packaged Album award.  Last year, the talented producer was honoured again at the BOMU awards.

“It is a big thing,” he said.

As a recording gospel artist, Lesole first released his debut album Re Maatla in 2002 followed by Re A Leboga in 2005.  The album My Image followed in 2009 and I Believe in 2012.  Although he is a Christian and a gospel musician, Lesole has declined to confine himself to one genre choosing to be rather adventurous in his musical exploits. “My gospel music appeals to everyone even those people who are not keen gospel followers.  I do not shy away from experimenting with beats like Hip Hop,” he said.
