Moakofi stars at darts awards

The Police marksman was the most decorated player at the ceremony held at the Botswana College of Agriculture (BCA) after he walked away with most of the individual awards.

He was honoured for his performance in the men’s team that he captained at the Region 5 darts championship in Zimbabwe in September and leading the Police team to a successful defence of the Southern Region League title. As league champions, Police  were given a P3,380 cheque. The runners-up were BDF followed by Botswana Telecommunications.  The fifth position went to Botswana College of Agriculture (BCA) ahead of Drillers.

Speaking at the awards’ ceremony, Moakofi attributed his achievements to hard work and dedication. He said a darts player must be dedicated and determined.

The award for long and distinguished service went to veteran darts player, John Setlhalefi.

The award recognises an individual’s contribution at local and national level.   Setlhalefi said the award will act as a catalyst for him to continue playing and abandon his plans to retire soon. He said he was contemplating retirement but after getting the award, he is not going anywhere.

Another top player who was honoured was David ‘China’ Kamanga.

Meanwhile, the Botswana Darts Association held its Annual General Meeting before the prize giving ceremony. In his report, BODA secretary general, Rebaone Kgaswane said one of the proposals that they have come up with is to set up a national team selection committee.

He told the meeting that the association’s constitution needs to be revamped. The secretary general said the association is looking at changing their logo because the current one is outdated.

A sample of the new logo was presented.

Some delegates at the meeting called for a holistic overhaul of the constitution and a task force was formed to look into this. One of the issues discussed at length was the formation of a disciplinary committee.

Some delegates felt that this was already covered by the constitution while others said the issue will be addressed by the constitutional task force. Another task force was set up to look into a proposal to set up individuals’ league.

There was a suggestion that the league would have a higher and lower division.

This would mean that players would relegate and gain promotion between the divisions.
