UB Hit By Unprecedented Litigations

Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development, Dr Unity Dow, said in Parliament last week that there have been 10 Industrial Court cases and seven High Court cases submitted by employees of UB against the institution since 2011.

“Mr Speaker, progress to date with the 10 cases submitted to the Industrial Court is that two of the cases have been dismissed, two have been withdrawn, one was ruled in favour of the university, while five of the cases are still pending,” said Dow. She also gave the various reasons the University had been taken to the Industrial Court by disgruntled UB employees.

said the status of the seven cases with the High. “The reasons for litigation include disputes over salary adjustments, challenging decisions to deny promotion, claims for payment of accumulated leave days, allegations of constructive dismissal, challenging decisions to suspend employees pending disciplinary hearings and challenging decisions to transfer employees from one unit to another.” Dow was responding to Selebi-Phikwe West MP, Dithapelo Keorapetse, who had asked her to state the number of UB employees and former employees who have taken the institution to the Industrial Court and the High Court respectively and the reasons for litigation.
