Chiefs punish Gaborone United

MOLEPOLOLE: Mochudi Centre Chiefs walked away with maximum points on Friday evening after hammering Gaborone United 2-0. David Makakaba broke the hearts of GU supporters with an early strike in the sixth minute with Keabetswe Jenamiso sealing the points 40 minutes later with the second goal.

Chiefs came into the match without Bonolo Frazier and Mara Moloi who are nursing injuries. GU goal poacher, Ronald Chikomo started on the bench before making a second half appearance.

The early goal by Makakaba brought fear in the GU camp. They nearly conceded in the 16th minute when Pontsho Moloi crossed into the box but the defence cleared the danger in the nick of time. Soon after, Lemponye Tshireletso drew a good save from GU goalkeeper, Goitseone Phoko from a set piece.

GU went on the hunt with Kgololo Kgogobi and Ntesang Simanyana pulling the strings but the last ball let them down.

Mompoloki Sephekolo in the Chiefs’ goal did well in the 27th minute when he fisted out Simanyana’s long-range blockbuster.

Against the run of play, Onalethata Tshekiso was unlucky when his header hit the side netting in the 38th minute while Mandla Mgadla’s set piece went over the crossbar two minutes later as GU piled the pressure.

The second half started with GU still on the ascendancy though they were pegged back by Chiefs’ second goal in the 46th minute.

The Reds nearly pulled a goal back in the 50th minute but Wilbroad Mutale made a vital clearance.

GU made double substitutions in the 53rd minute, throwing in Chikomo and Gosegonna Molapisi. Chiefs’ coach, Mike Sithole told Sport Monitor after the match that he was happy with the performance of his team despite the absence of some of the players. He said the win was a sign that the players are starting to understand each other.  GU coach, Rahman Gumbo said that they let in simple goals.

He explained that he realised that his players gave their opponents too much respect and only came into the game when it was too late. He lamented that the players failed to utilise the chances they created.
