Team Botswana target more medals

Botswana chef de mission, Healer Modiradilo said they are happy with the number of the medals they have and they are looking forward to rake in more before the games end.

He said most coaches have achieved their targets and that is why they are satisfied with the number of medals.

“We have collected 17 medals so far and we have three gold, seven silver and seven bronze but we are looking forward to getting more in track and field events.

We are strong in those events and I am certain we will be adding more to our haul,” said Modiradilo.

Botswana got four medals from boxing, five from judo, six from athletics and one each from swimming and netball.

In athletics, Botswana men proved too good for the rest of the pack in the 400m final as they scooped all the three medals. Karabo Sibanda came first in 47.38secs, followed by Leungo Scotch in 47.42 and Wanano Keetile in 47.79.

In soccer, the Botswana girls could bag a medal if they win their final match against Zimbabwe today and high-riding South Africa beat Namibia.

Botswana head coach, Sepheko Motlhagodi said they are still in with a chance to take a medal.

In boxing, Otukile Mahommed was the only Botswana boxer to bag gold after beating Teboho Masiu of Lesotho. Ogaketse Kutlwano fell to Zimbabwe’s Trade Nkomozabo and Atang Mosenke was beaten by Zambia’s Nkumbu Silungwe in the finals.

Botswana boxing coach, Master Luza was satisfied with the result, saying what was important was that all his four boxers walked away with medals.  Tennis starlets Nthabiseng Mogopodi and Phatsimo Ruele won bronze in the girls tennis doubles against Mozambican opponents.
