Student in gang rape case

The matter was adjourned to January 22. Attorney, Karabo Pogiso, volunteered to represent the trio pro bono and sought time to consult them. “I offer to assist the accused on a pro bono basis and I apply that another mention date be set to consult further with them,” Pogiso told the court.

The three are alleged to have raped a woman at Block One location in Francistown in May this year after drinking alcohol at a party. It is said the boys realised the woman was heavily intoxicated, so they followed her while she left the party to go home and gang-raped her.

Before Pogiso volunteered to represent the accused, one student admitted to the charge after his legal rights were explained to him, while his accomplices pleaded not guilty.

The student told the court that the incident happened after a drinking spree at a party that the woman also attended.

The magistrate, Sijabuliso Siziba, interjected and advised the student not to elaborate on what might have happened because the matter was not at trial stage.

Inspector Alexander Phale told the court that the state will call eight witnesses and investigations–∆ in the matter have been completed.

The matter has been adjourned to January 22 next year to allow the defence counsel to get further instructions from the accused.
