Looking for a shepherd: BDF XI was left out without a head coach

The Mascom Top 8 champions parted ways with Chikwanda last week following a string of poor results.

Chikwanda arrived at BDF XI after the departure of Kgengwenyane who had gone for studies in the middle of last season.

He went on to lead BDF XI to the Mascom Top 8 title. There is speculation to the effect that Kgengwenyane is the preferred choice to replace Chikwanda although he is yet to be approached about the job. Kgengwenyane is credited with building a strong side before he left for studies last season.

He is reportedly viewed as one of the coaches who understand the club’s culture.

BDF XI secretary, Isaac Letsholathebe yesterday told Mmegi Sport that they are working on finding Chikwanda’s replacement but nothing concrete has been decided.

He did not rule out the possibility of Kgengwenyane returning but pointed out that he has not been approached.

He said Joel Chonga remains the caretaker coach for now. Matebele have also roped in former coach, Louis Setshwane to assist Chonga.

Setshwane who is currently pursuing his studies is on vacation.

In his first assignment, Chonga guided his charges to a 1-1 draw against Police XI last Sunday. Meanwhile BDF XI has lifted goalkeeper, Takudzwa Ndoro’s suspension.

Ndoro was suspended for alleged indiscipline last month but returned to the bench for the first time on Sunday against Police XI.

“We spoke to him and he apologised so the suspension was lifted,” Letsholathebe said without revealing much about the indiscipline.

Ndoro will vie with Ontiretse Gaothobogwe for the number one jersey. Gaothobogwe has been the number one goalkeeper for Matebele after Ndoro’s suspension.
