BoBA OGM to tackle funding challenge

Boxing, like other sports disciplines, faces financial challenges, which affects its operations.

BoBA public relations officer, Kenny Maragana said the association has numerous challenges including finance and shortage of qualified coaches.

He said the regions are affected most by financial constraints as there are no companies in rural areas to sponsor clubs. Due to financial constraints, clubs at times fail to participate in tournaments.

Maragana told Mmegi Sport that clubs in areas like Kgalagadi and Masunga need sponsors to help them recruit and sustain talented boxers.

He said BoBA appreciates the backing it gets from Botswana Breweries Limited (BBL) through its brand, Keone Mooka Mageu. BBL has been sponsoring boxing for the past 14 years.

Meanwhile, tomorrow’s meeting will also discuss progress made under the talent identification programme, Re Ba Bona Ha. “This is our youth development programme through, which we want to invest in children while still at schools to catch them young.

It is imperative to come together with all affiliates or clubs to try to find how we can help each other,” said Margana.

He stated that BoBA is keen to grow its brand in order to attract many followers and sponsors.

He said all executive committee members will be present at the meeting, which will be boxing’s last for 2014.  This will be the new committee’s first OGM since it was elected in September.

The new president, Thato Patlakwe ousted Michael Moroka during this year’s elections, and stakeholders are eager to hear what the new committee has in store for the sport.
