Batshu told Parliament that the government is spending lots of money each year to deport the immigrants. Commenting on State of National Address, the minister asked MPs to join hands in trying to reduce the number of illegal immigrants in the country.

“I urge you MPs to talk to your constituents to try to stop employing illegal immigrants. The government is trying all it can do to solve the problem. We have taken some to courts while others who have been found guilty are in jail,” Batshu said.

Recently, President Ian Khama admitted that the problem of illegal immigration remains a challenge and over the past years, the government has deported over 36,000 illegal immigrants.

Efforts by the government to fine those who over stayed in the country does not to be bearing much fruit. The government is spending over P2 million every year on repatriation of illegal immigrants.

Batshu told Parliament that the shortage of magistrates and judges in the country should be looked into. He said government is losing court cases because they take too long to be heard and in the end, justice is compromised.

“Backlog of cases at magistrates, High Court and Industrial Courts are worrisome. There is need for the government to ensure that the issue is addressed as a matter of urgency.

The reason why exhibits go missing or evidence is lacking is because some cases take more than a year to be heard,” he explained.

He said criminals would be dealt with effectively if cases were tried on time. He slammed foreign pastors, saying that they should go back and preach in their countries. He said some of the pastors defraud Batswana, claiming they can perform miracles.
