Ponka shines at Tshanda�s birthday bash

Her mentor, kwasakwasa maestro, Franco, has clearly done a good job preparing Ponka for the rigours of the entertainment world and has clearly come full circle.
A number of local performers had failed to win the crowd’s support, but the energetic musician proved a different breed with a hearty showing that earned her rousing applause from the crowd.
The Ramotswa woman had to muscle for the spotlight against giants such as Pat Shange, Zizi Congo, Thiza, Sidney Mogopodi and William Mthethwa. She performed beyond expectation, as the crowd appeared totally impressed.
A talented dancer, Ponka easily melted the audience’s heart with some acrobatic moves on stage while intensely engaging the crowd with her showing.
Ponka started as a back up singer for the then disco musician Thibazo leading the popular Seileng track, which blasted on Radio Botswana week-in, week-out for five years ago.
After Thibazo ditched disco for Christianity, Ponka, became the lead vocalist for the defunct disco outfit Hot Spark before going solo a few years later.
A combination of silk dancing and vocal skills has steadily ushered her into the path of stardom.
By the time she climbed off stage some members of the audience were heard shouting, “That’s our girl, our own Splash” on Saturday.
