Masole,Mhotshwa defend golf titles

Mhotshwa was winning the title for the fourth year in a row. It was not an easy win for Masole who had to go for play offs with Charlton Makoko. In the end, Masole won the championship division with a convincing 79, 75, 79. Mhotshwa was also given stiff competition by Minki Molatlhegi, but ended up winning the title. Masole told Monitor Sport that winning was a dream come true. He said he has been working hard for the past few months preparing for the tournament.
“To me this is the beginning of a new year and I do not want anything to stand in my way. I just have to push hard and win all the upcoming Botswana Golf Union (BGU) tournaments.
My aim is to turn a professional golfer soon and that can only happen if I win more tournaments,” he said.
BGU secretary general, Mpho Kelosiwang said the union intends to reduce the number of players who participate in tournaments in future. He said the idea is to improve the quality of the tournaments. The tournament is one of the four World Amateur Golf Rankings events in Botswana and contributes significant points to the BGU order of merit. The tournament also serves as part of the Windhoek Lager Africa Golf Championship.
For his part, BGU representative, Enoch Mushango announced that a new handicapping system will be introduced to try and level the playing field. He said handicaps grading in all clubs would be the same. He said BGU has done fairly well in youth development this year.
The tournament was divided into four categories being championship division (handicap 0-7), A division (handicap 8-15), B division (handicap 16-24) and the women’s division (0-30).
The championship division was played over 54 holes and 36 holes for the A, B and women’s divisions. The tournament received a cash boost of P200, 000 from Orange Botswana, of which about P60, 000 was used for awarding the winners.
