Molosiwa, Mojuta lead Phikwe mayoral race

Molosiwa and Mojuta jumped back into the Selebi Phikwe Town Council as nominated councillors and were sworn in with their elected colleagues last Friday.

The ruling party, which enjoys a majority in the council, is expected to hold a caucus today to decide on who they should back as a mayor and the deputy.

Molosiwa told Mmegi he was comfortable serving in any position councillors afforded him. He said in returning to the local authority, his main aim had not been to become the mayor, but instead to “restore the council’s dignity”, among other issues.

“I am not under any pressure to become the mayor but to work towards reviving the House’s dignity that was affected during the previous council. What we need to do is to deliver the service and restore the community’s confidence in the local authority, not to jostle for positions,” he said.

Mojuta, on the other hand, said although he would not reject a call to become the mayor, the decision was in fellow councillors’ hands.  “Ga nkake ka gana thomo ya bone (I would not reject their mandate). However, I would not go around soliciting support from councillors.

“If anybody else is appointed, I will gladly support him. The ascension to the mayoral position is not as significant as the accountability the minister has given me as a nominated councillor,” he said.

During the swearing in of councillors last Friday, the Town Clerk Poloko Mojalemotho said the new civic leaders’ entry was timely as the local authority is working on its Urban Development 4.

“The community has to be fully consulted by councillors to have an input in the five year plan,” he said.

“Teamwork between the council’s political and management wings is paramount for the local authority to deliver on its mandate to bring services to the people,” said Mojalemotho, adding that, “Without the management wing councillors alone are just a caucus and without councillors the management cannot do anything”.
