Bowler Morton claims first scalps at New Zealand meet

The tournament is held in Christchurch, New Zealand. Against his Sri Lanka opponent, Morton won 2-1 in a tight contest after the opening two sets were tied. The Motswana won the first set by eight shots to four before the Sri Lankan bounced back taking the second set 9-8. In the tie breaker, Morton prevailed 5-0.

Each game consists of two sets of nine rounds.  Against his Namibia opponent, Morton cruised to a 2-0 sets win.

Botswana Bowling Association (BBA) spokesperson, John Gaborutwe told Mmegi Sport that the Gaborone bowling club player has moved to third out of 12 in the rankings in his section.

In other men’s results, New Zealand defeated Fiji by winning both sets 17 to -2 shots and 14 to four shots.

Scotland edged Canada after a tie-breaker winning the first set 13-3 while losing the 8-4. China defeated Norfolk Island by a tie-breaker as well.

All other games were settled by a tie-breaker as Malaysia defeated Namibia, while in the last match of the opening day, Swaziland walloped Argentina 2-0.

Meanwhile, Botswana’s female representative, Nelly Senna did not start the competition well after losing his opening matches to opponents from Netherlands and Fiji. Against Netherlands, Senna lost the first set by four to 10 shots and the second by five to six shots. She went on to lose to Fiji 5-12 and 5-13  in the first and second sets, respectively.

In other women’s game, Norfolk Island beat Fiji while the Philippines  prevailed over Canada winning both sets.

The hosts defeated China Hong Kong by winning both sets 10-6 and 7-6.

In another match, Malaysia defeated Namibia by a tie-breaker after winning the first set 9-3 and lost the second set 5-6. The tournament ends on Sunday.
