“It is true I am preparing a bill of cost for cases that I represented BNF in and won. It’s a lot of money - over P1,000,000 - but the cost has to go through taxation first. I represented BNF in more than five cases,” BNF attorney Mboki Chilisa said.

He added that they have not yet summoned the concerned members, but they will do so after taxation.

One of the reasons why Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) was forced to use the plain umbrella symbol without the emblems of the three cooperating parties, Botswana Peoples Party (BPP), BNF and Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD) was because of legal wranglings.

The other case that the BNF spent a lot of money on is the one in which some of its former members challenged the authenticity of their president’s membership card.

The BNF spokesperson Moeti Mohwasa said their party has instructed all lawyers who had represented them in different cases to collect debts from people who lost.

“The members who had taken the party to court will have to pay all legal costs. This resolution was taken by different BNF congresses. Our wish is that members could be going through party procedures to lodge their complaints, but we cannot deny members to go to the courts whenever they want to do so,” Mohwasa said.
