Who will be VP?

Tshekedi Khama

It is possible that Khama will create a dynasty by appointing his younger brother, Tshekedi Khama as the Vice President.

Another contender to the second highest post is Nonofo Molefhi who is the Minister of Infrastructure, Science and Technology. Even before the elections, Molefhi and the younger Khama were tipped for the second most powerful position in the land.

But the past week has seen Molefhi’s contention losing favour, with speculation intensifying that the reason the President forced a losing constitutional case was really to ensure that the younger brother gets the nod.

With BDP MPs now looking more ready to rally behind the President’s choices, Khama should be breathing easier, especially after the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) and the Attorney General (AG) suffered a second humiliating defeat on Monday when a panel of five Court of Appeal judges dismissed their appeal with costs. The BDP and the AG had appealed the case they lost on Friday over the constitutionality of the Standing Orders with respect to the election of the Speaker, the Deputy Speaker and the endorsement of the Vice President. The AG and the BDP wanted the elections and endorsement of these important posts to be done by show of hands to coerce their MPs to endorse Khama’s choice.  Just like the elections of Gladys Kokorwe as Speaker and Kagiso Molatlhegi as Deputy Speaker, the endorsement of Tshekedi is expected to be a mere formality this afternoon. When Khama announced cabinet recently, he retained his younger brother as the Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism.
