Court denies Zim asylum seeker bail

The prosecutor, police Inspector Oteng Selalame applied for Tshepang Moyo to be further remanded in custody because he may escape if granted bail.

Selalame further told Principal Magistrate Dumisani Basupi that he was awaiting a psychiatric report to establish the accused’s state of mind.

He added that he should not be given bail because the police may also charge him with another offence of being in possession of dagga without a licence.

Countering the application for his remand in prison, Moyo told the court that he would not escape as the prosecution claimed.

“I cannot go back to Zimbabwe because I came here fearing for my life because of the country’s political environment. I am also taking medication and there is no way I can escape and not stand trial because I am getting my medication here,” said Moyo.

Moyo added he would not escape to any country because he was still waiting for the response from authorities regarding his application for asylum.

However Magistrate Basupi remanded Moyo as per the prosecution’s application.

Moyo will appear in court again on November 17.
