BOMU awards nomination unveiled

Rewind to last year, the unveiling had many artists turning up, giving the event the celebrity status it deserved.

Fast track to Thursday:  The turn up was pathetic and many artists who were announced as the nominees were not there. The event actually had to start late because the guests were still trickling in.

Is this an early indication that the BOMU awards, this time around, are set to get a battering from its new rival award event, the Yarona FM music awards?

As if the announcement of the nominees was made in haste, nominees for the BOMU awards so-called seven major categories were not announced on Thursday, with organisers claiming the nominees for those categories will be announced this week.

The nominees that were not announced include the song of the year, album of the year, artist of the year (male and female), group or band of the year, best newcomer, and best video.

Oteng Moshotle aka DJ Oats meanwhile set the pace in the early stage of nominations as he notched three nominations in the best-packaged album, best music producer, and best house album.

Antonelle has two nominations in best-packaged album and best house. Along with rapper Euri (best rap, best packaged), gospel group One 27(best packaged, best gospel contemporary).

This year though, the BOMUs can’t escape comparisons with their new rival, the Yarona FM Music awards, which have already closed deals with Mascom, Orange, as well as launching their nominees at the prestigious Lansmore Hotel red carpet style.

Contrast, hardly a month ahead of the BOMUs, it was still not known last week whether they will have the sponsors. This task has been assigned to a company called Quart Media, who are responsible for hunting for sponsorship, promoting the BOMU awards around the country, managing the awards night, coordinating of the awards logistics, including choreography, production of the awards, among others.

There were rumours that at the nominees unveiling to the effect that Btv could be willing to pop out P400, 000; while MVA was exploring a P500 000 deal, but nothing had been signed.

The BOMUs will be staged on December 13, at the GICC.
