Fight Over Girlfriend Leaves Student Hospitalised

The two were apparently fighting over a girl. An insider at the school has revealed that the student is likely to miss out on a few of the Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) examinations, which end on November 17.

The source added that rumours are flying thick and fast that the incident happened after hours but within the school premises. The source divulged that the suspect found the complainant talking to his girlfriend (also a student). This apparently did not go down well with the suspect who accused the complainant of trying to destroy his relationship. He reportedly couldn’t hold is his temper and got physical. The complainant retaliated with fists but was plummeted to a pulp and left sprawled on the ground, bleeding.

Station Commander of Central police Superintendent Lebalang Maniki confirmed the incident. “We are still investigating a case of a fight that involved to teenage students aged 18- years-old,” he said. He however said they had not established the cause of the misunderstanding and were yet to find out what could have triggered the fight from the complainant who is hospitalised. Maniki added that they had not yet charged the suspect for any offence pending investigations.

Ministry of Education and Skills and Development Regional Director of Northeast, Oupa Masesane denied knowledge of the incident. He however said it might have been reported to the Chief Education Officers.

“Unfortunately the Chief Education Officers who might have knowledge about this matter are all out of the office and attending to textbook issues,” he said.

Masesane, however, noted that arrangements could be made for the hospitalised student to write his examinations. “If there is proof that the student missed the examinations due to medical problems he would be allowed to re-write the exam or repeat the subject. If he is fit to write from his hospital bed we can make arrangements to that effect,” he said.
