Masunga student barred from BGCSE exam

A source close to the matter said the chief invigilator who is also a teacher at the school, refused the girl entry into the hall because she did not have a name tag.

The female student whose names are known to this publication reportedly hails from Matsitama village in the Central District. The student is reportedly under government care through the Rural Area Development Programme.

The student was however allowed to sit for other examinations.  “The other teachers were more understanding. They allowed students without name tags to sit for examinations,” the source said.

On Tuesday the school head Banabatshipi Letsholathebe confirmed that several students had failed to write some BGCSE examinations. She however denied allegations that this was because they had failed to produce name tags.

Letsholathebe refused to disclose the reasons the students did not sit for the examinations and instead referred Mmegi to examination regulatory body Botswana Examination Council (BEC). BEC spokesperson Fingile Makgalemele was unaware of the matter. She however asserted that BEC did not have the authority to bar students from sitting for an exam if they did not have a name tag.

The Ministry of Education and Skills Development Regional Director of North East, Oupa Masesane, said he had received information from the school management about students missing their examinations but investigations were still ongoing.
