Woman raped while waiting for her boyfriend

Superintendent Amos Kekgathetswe of Mahalapye police said the victim, aged between 30 to 35 years, told the police that she was familiar with the features of her assailant, who by press time was still at large.

“We are investigating a house invasion rape which took place at Xhosa 1 on Saturday night,” he said.

“When reporting the case, the victim revealed that the perpetrator made his entry through a door which had been left unlocked.

“She said that she didn’t lock the door because she was expecting a visitor, her boyfriend.  “When the rapist entered the house, the victim said she didn’t take any action upon hearing the door opening because she thought that it was her boyfriend.”

The Station Commander said the victim suspects that the culprit is someone from her neighbourhood.

Kekgathetswe urged members of the public to take extra precautions in order to safeguard themselves from attackers. He pleaded with women not to walk alone at night nor frequent bars and clubs alone, saying this could give rapists greater opportunities to attack.

He also urged women to walk in groups especially at night so that they could help each other when attacked.

“Although every woman has the right to stay the way they want in their private bedrooms, they should take security measures when sleeping alone such as locking doors as well as installing burglar bars on doors and window bars to prevent the easy entry of predators,” he said.
