The declaration was made by the Chief Justice of the High Court, Justice Maruping Dibotelo on state media at 2am on October 26, 2014. 

BDP had accumulated the required 29 seats out of 57 in the 2014 general elections just after midnight on Sunday.

Meanwhile Khama has lost six former cabinet members namely, Johnie Swarts, Keletso Rakhudu, Olebile Gaborone, Gaotlhaetse Matlhabaphiri, Patrick Masimolole and Kitso Mokaila. 

With 54 seats decided the opposition Umbrella Democratic Change (UDC), which was contesting the general elections for the first time, has so far won 15 seats while the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) has got only three. The BDP is leading with 36 seats.

The BCP has lost their stronghold constituencies with their president Dumelang Saleshando losing to UDC’s Phenyo Butale in the hotly contested Gaborone Central.
