Right to vote: There will be no softball action this weekend due to the national elections

Botswana Softball Association acting public relations officer, Renny Molete told Mmegi Sport that they decided not to continue with the league over the weekend as they want to give players a chance to cast their votes.  Meanwhile, Molete said there was no league action last weekend because tertiary education institutions were staging their games. He noted that most of the players in the league are students.

Stakes are high this season with every team eyeing the lucrative P100,000 first prize from BOFINet who have sponsored the league with P1 million out of which, P649,000 go towards prize money.

“It is the first time in the history of the sport to get a P1 million sponsorship. Last season, the agreement that we had with Shell Oil Botswana came to an end.  The sponsorship was P900,000 for a period of three years, which meant it was P300,000 per season. This time around, the amount is for one season,” he said.

Molete asserted that the increase in sponsorship is a sign that the sport is growing because in the past, football was the only code that got a lot of money.

Eleven men teams and nine women teams are taking part in the Southern league while the Northern league is expected to commence next month. Molete stated that they are yet to confirm the official launch of the league. In the south, BDF IX is currently top of the log in the men’s competition while Jwaneng based Wells are enjoying the lead in the women’s league.
