The mega rally for the Gaborone region starring President Ian Khama  was a total flop. This was evidenced by empty spaces at the Maharaja open space. Gaborone has five constituencies; Gaborone Central, Gaborone North, Gaborone South, Gaborone Bonnington South and Gaborone Bonnington North.

Over 24 artists including crowd puller, Vee, entertained the crowd the whole day into the evening in what was expected to be a grand show of might. Plus, the BDP chose the spot well, being adjacent to the main road where all passers-by could see and wonder, and join in.

Despite the mega flop Party leader Ian Khama lived up to his reputation as a great entertainer as he pulled off stunts when he arrived on a bicycle. As he arrived on his bicycle children waited for him holding banners with the message, “Vote BDP for our future”.  And when he  was called to the stage Khama invited Rupert Hambira to jump on the back seat of his bike before he drove around  the four marquee tents  greeting people.

Khama who was really in his element took to the stage dancing to the amusement of everyone. Later he said he performed better than popular musician Vee. He also joked that he was the one who taught Vee  how to dance.

Perhaps the poor attendance of the mega rally is an indication of a BDP losing its hold in Gaborone where they currently hold four of the five seats?

The arrival of the  Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) which has fielded Ndaba Gaolathe and Duma Boko in the two Bonnington constituencies has changed the landscape.

While the BDP’s Botsalo Ntuane has been busy with his campaign, holding a number of successful music festival rallies in the constituency, recently his opponent Gaolathe held one of the successful rallies in the constituency without inviting musicians to perform at his rally.
