The sacking of the Chairperson of the Council and the resignation of the Vice Chancellor is attributed to political interference. Media reports indicate that BIUST is a victim of Botswana Democratic Party’s factions or internal wrangling.

The future of an estimated 1000 prospective students is uncertain. These are the cream of our society who could improve the country’s global competitiveness.  It should be noted that the first Vice Chancellor of BIUST also left the institution under suspicious circumstances, and this is a second false start that could have far reaching consequences. This current situation will certainly make it difficult to attract international experts that would make BIUST a reputable institution.

What is happening to BIUST is an indication of how lowly the BDP government regards education as a whole. We have noted over the years the decline of political willingness to propel our education to greater heights.

Botswana Congress Party reiterates its intention to create a ministry dedicated to higher education. We believe this will create enough space to focus on pertinent issues in the said sector and ensure political interference is spotted earlier and dealt with effectively.

We therefore, condemn the BDP factions for shamelessly putting their selfish interests ahead of those of the nation.  The country’s aspiration of being a world player in the most influential science and technology sector is in jeopardy, thanks to BDP.
