The gruesome accident, which left Ledumang residents reeling in shock, occurred at the railway crossing behind Northgate Mall. This is the second fatal accident involving a train to have occurred at the same spot in less than seven days.

Superintendent Bonosi Molapisi of Broadhurst Police Station confirmed the incident saying the deceased, who was alone in the car, was driving from the A1 highway into Ledumang.

“She was driving from Northgate Mall towards Ledumang. We have not yet established the details of what happened but we understand she collided with the train which was north bound,” said Molapisi.

He added that just last week a man was hit by an oncoming train several metres away from where the above mentioned accident transpired.

When the Mmegi team arrived at the scene, everything had gone back to normal. However, there were visible pieces of shattered glasses scattered across the railway line.

An eyewitness, who preferred anonymity, said the car did not stop at the level crossing, adding that the driver may have not checked whether there was a train coming before maneuvering across the rail line.

“She was alone in the car. She appeared absentminded. Everything happened so fast. I was not really concentrating but I saw her suddenly try to pull the brake but the train was already too close and it smashed into the car,” said the witness. The first people on the scene were fire department officers who confirmed that the woman had died.

Superintendent Molapisi could however not reveal the name of the deceased, as her family members had not been notified at the time of going to print.
