Teenage DJ Kenn a force to reckon with

Showbiz had a chat with the teenager who is fast making a name for himself.

“I come from a family of six that comprises of my mother, four siblings and myself.  My family is supportive of my career, especially my eldest sister Chilumbe Molefe who has always organised gigs for me,” said the 15-year-old student.

DJ Kenn further said that Chilumbe owns a company Chilu and Crew, which entertains children around the city of Gaborone and that is where he honed his deejaying skill.

“Whenever I attended sessions organised by my sister, I used to watch the DJs spinning the discs and I was hooked. In 2009, I started learning spinning techniques and in 2010, I started deejaying professionally and ever since then, I have performed at many clubs in Gaborone,” said DJ Kenn.

He that he has also had the opportunity to perform at a number of clubs in Palapye when he is in his home village of Serowe.

This year, he decided to enter Serowe Battle of the DJs, which is the biggest DJ competition in the central district.

Pitted against him for the top spot were older and obviously more experienced DJs namely Skul, RnR, Key Maker, Hero and Amstel.

“Needless to say, I was nervous competing against older DJs, but during the competition, I regained my confidence and eventually I was crowned the winner,” DJ Kenn said.

The entertainer who is a student at Legae Academy in Gaborone said that he is going to use the cash prize that he won to buy deejaying equipment.

“I have also won a weekend at Khama Rhino Sanctuary and I think I am going to ask my sister Chilumbe to accompany me there as a way of rewarding her for the support that she has given me throughout my career as a DJ,” DJ Kenn said, adding that he has also won a slot to perform an important gig at Fresh Exclusive Club in the tourist town of Maun on the festive season holidays.

DJ Kenn advised other young would-be DJs to be resilient in their quest to learn the trade.  He said that they should not shy away from learning the ropes from more experienced DJs.

The teenage entertainer is part of Beat Freaks crew of DJs and he considers Thabo Tebelelo, a member, his greatest mentor.

“When I finish my basic education, I intend to pursue tertiary education, but deejaying will always be my first love and there is no way I am going to quit it,” said the DJ who says that he is inspired by many others including, Dimples, Khenzo, Scratch and Phouboy.

He said that although he infuses many music genres while spinning the discs, he particularly specialises in hip hop.
