BDF IX were done with their opponents by the fifth inning.  It was just not Wells day, as they could not match their opponents.

Wells coach, Masupakwena Ross admitted that they had a bad game, adding that they didn’t play to expectations.

He said his team has been plagued by injuries and this had a negative impact on their performance.  Ross said some of their players are nursing injuries including regular catcher Thabiso Radithobane, pitcher Kealeboga Tsienyane, and short stopper, James Motoroka.

“In fact that’s where we lost the game,” he said, referring to Motoroka’s injury.

However, Ross warned that they are going to make a fight back in order to claim the P100, 000 first prize.  “We are eyeing the championship with both our men’s and women’s team,” he said.   BDF IX coach, James Moremedi said they continued with their preparations after the Barloworld tournament. Moremedi said they have been working on their offence since their defence was up to scratch.

Regarding the Saturday match, said the strategy was to neutralise the Jwaneng team from the start, adding that this is what they are going to apply against all strong sides.

The BDF IX coach said they want to start accumulating points early so that if they run out of steam, they would still be in the pole position.   “The league season is short, you have to start preparing for the championship,” he said.

In the women’s game played at the same venue, Wells trounced BDF IX 15-3.  After the opening league games, there was an exhibition game featuring the masters.  Some of the legends showed their old touch.

Meanwhile, Botswana Softball Association (BSA) vice president, Katlholo Mosimanegape said while the South zone league started over the weekend, it is still to start in the north.

He said the Northern league would kick off in two weeks’ time.  Mosimanegape said they want to hold the league championships by April 11 next year.

The BSA league is sponsored by BOFINET for P1 million.   Mosimanegape said the sponsorship covers one season but there is a possibility that it could be extended.

According to the official, P600, 000 from the sponsorship is reserved for the prize money.  Both the men’s and women’s champions will clinch P100, 000 while the runners up get P50, 000. BOFINET takes over from Shell who has been sponsoring the league for P300, 000 per season.
