Kalafatis’ murder in May 13, 2009 has been subject to conspiracy theories, with many suspecting that orders to kill him may have been from well-placed persons in positions of power. Documents and a video leaked to Mmegi suggest that Kalafatis death had long been planned months before his execution.

The revelation that Kalafatis was an informer are contained in the interrogation video of Andrew Sanderson, a shady character who has claimed that he was at one point paid money to kill Kalafatis by a Gaborone businessman Alan West.

Information gathered shows that Kalafatis’s handler at the MI (name known to this publication and withheld because he is still on duty) was an unstable agent who snort cocaine and carried around an Uzi pistol.

This junkie agent who is high in the DIS ranks was alleged to be very close to Kalafatis.  From the video the interrogation of Sanderson the, MI agents express knowledge of Kalafatis criminal dealings and believed he is an “extremely dangerous man”.

In the explosive revelations last Friday, Mmegi reported how the MI agents who later executed Kalafatis hatched a plan to eliminate him. In the video they believed he always carried an Uzi pistol, which they suspect came from his MI handler. Sanderson revealed in the video how Kalafatis dealt with the security agents.

Kalafatis’s informant status with the feared DIS and MI made him to be untouchable and arrogant in the criminal world. The police could not easily arrest him as he was connected.

The intelligence documents shows that Kalafatis was able to stay with his unstable handler for long because, “the handler was a crack-head who kept begging for stuff.”

The crack snorting handler who was also a handler of Sanderson was always broke and text message evidence shows how he kept begging for favours from his informers. Kalafatis’s major undoing however was to mess with the highly connected and untouchable family of Alan West. It was such a grave mistake that even his security handlers could not save him.

They said in the interrogation video, “O tshwere go sele jaanong” (He touched the untouchable).  The killers of Kalafatis were three officers of the BDF MI namely, Gotshosamang Sechele, Ronny Matako, and Boitshoko Maifala. They were convicted of his murder in 2011. However, President Ian Khama pardoned them a few months into their 11-year jail sentence. The men have since gone back to work.
