The 2009 league champions have hit turbulence with reports Gumbo is wanted in Zimbabwe and Namibia while three key players, Jackie Mothatego and winger, Mandla Mgadla and striker Tebogo Sembowa were suspended.

Mothatego and Mgadla’s suspensions have since been lifted. The players were asked to stop training with the team two weeks ago over alleged indiscipline.

Club secretary, Herbert Letsebe reassured GU supporters that coach, Gumbo is committed to the team. Gumbo was recently linked with a move to Zimbabwean side, Highlanders, to replace Kelvin Kaindu.

Letsebe, however, insisted that their coach is here to stay. He said they also heard rumours but assured supporters that the Zimbabwean mentor has vowed to honour his contract and will be ready to extend when it expires.

Meanwhile, Sembowa remains suspended as investigations regarding his matter continue.  Letsebe said Mgadla and Mothatego’s suspensions were lifted because investigations into their matters have been concluded. The players were expected to resume training with the rest of the team yesterday. Letsebe said they do not want to get into details regarding the players’ suspension but said they met with both Mothatego and Mgadla and were happy to be back with the team.

Letsebe said all three players had different matters altogether which led to their suspension that is why Sembowa is still suspended because his matter is still being investigated. The trio’s absence left a void in the squad as GU had to rely on youngsters like Karabo Phiri and Obonwe Maome to carry the heavy burden. In their absence, GU lost two consecutive games against BMC and Orapa United. The losses left a serious dent on their race to win this season’s Premier League title.

Mothatego and Sembowa were linked with a move to rivals, Township Rollers at the beginning of the season but GU managed to retain them. The suspension has since cost the two players a place in the national team. With the Premier League on pause this weekend because of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, both Mgadla and Mothatego are expected to be ready for GU’s next assignment. They will be away to Motlakase Power Dynamos in the next game.
