More buses for UDC campaign

According to UDC officials, the four buses are part of a fleet of seven that the opposition party plans to use in its countrywide campaign trail ahead of October 24. Party leaders and activists will use the buses to campaign around the country. One of the two latest buses is branded with UDC vice president, Ndaba Gaolatlhe’s name and is inscribed ‘iNdaba yam’ istraight’ a reference to a Brenda Fassie song about being forthright with one’s issues.  The other new bus is branded with UDC president Duma Boko’s name and is inscribed ‘Ha e duma ya tsamaya’.

The two buses are understood to have arrived on Sunday and were both sourced from South Africa. Special assistant to the UDC president, Elliot Moshoke, said more buses were due to arrive soon. “So far our party has four buses and we are still expecting the last three,” he said.

“Two buses will be used by the president and his vice while the other two will be used by party members in different areas,” Moshoke said.

Mmegi has learnt that ‘friends’ of the UDC in South Africa and elsewhere donated two of the buses, while the party itself has funded another two.  Another source close to the opposition bloc said the UDC had paid over P200,000 in customs fees to clear the buses that came from across the border thus far.

It is still unclear who the UDC’s benefactors are. Moshoke refused to comment on the party’s finances or its spending.

“That information is confidential,” he said.

“Do other parties disclose their sponsors or donors to the media?

“We are not the only party, which is campaigning with buses.  The difference is our party does not have helicopters like the BDP.

“Once the BDP discloses its donors and the reason why they are abusing state resources then we will disclose ours,” he said.

Meanwhile, Boko is understood to be in South Africa for interviews with SABC, eNCA, CNN and others.
