A loss for either side on Friday would mean certain elimination from the contest. But Butler is not about to give up the fight despite the grim log situation where the Zebras are bottom.
“We have to be positive and be bold. We have nothing to lose.
We can beat Egypt,” Butler said of a side that used to send shivers down the spine of many sides until their last title in 2010. However, the Pharoahs have rescinded spectacularly and are a pale shadow of the team that was so brutally dominant until four years ago.
Egypt suffered a humiliating 6-1 defeat to Ghana in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers just months after they confirmed their regression with an implosion at the hands of minnows Cape Verde.
Egypt are failing to recover from the effects of the ‘Arab Spring’ and fell to back to back defeats against Senegal and bitter rivals, Tunisia last month. It is such a record that will give Butler fresh hope of a first ever Zebras win over the North Africa side.
The Zebras have made progress under Butler, but have failed to apply the coup-de-tat even in inviting situations.
Against Tunisia, the Zebras were cruising with 17minutes to go, before the North Africans scored two late goals to clinch the tie 2-1.Senegal were on the ropes for long periods but the visitors stole two breakaway goals to leave Gaborone with a 2-0 victory. The Zebras and Egypt meet again a week later in the reverse fixture in Egypt. The Zebras squad for the Egypt tie:
