To this end, allow me to extend our sincere congratulations on behalf of the Government and people of the Republic of Botswana, and indeed on my own behalf through you to the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Germany on this historic day in the political calendar of your great country.
We have had a long relationship with the people of Germany since we established formal diplomatic ties soon after our independence in 1966 and we greatly appreciate the strong determination and will that motivate the Germans in all that they do as a nation. Consequently, over the years, such determination has seen Germany become a pillar, alongside other great nations in the continued political and economic integration of Europe through the European Union and a leading voice in addressing global issues such as the promotion of human rights, conflict resolution, climate change and sustainable development.
In this respect we have been fortunate as a country and a people to have found in Germany a reliable and true friend that our country can count on particularly in our continued efforts to mitigate challenges relating to the socio economic development of our country and its people.
Your Excellency, Germany has played a critical role in our development efforts over the years and it is for this reason that we highly value and appreciate the generous support and technical assistance that Germany has provided us through the German Development Service which was instrumental in the development of the human resources in this country. Therefore we thank the Germans for their invaluable technical vocational education & training and assistance to the Botswana College for Engineering Technology as well as the Palapye Technical Training College.
Similarly over the years the relations between our two countries have grown stronger, as demonstrated by high level visits and as well as interaction between our business communities,
Your Excellency, I am aware, and I am glad to note that the German Embassy is working with our officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to review the current agreement of cooperation dating back to 1974 with the aim of coming up with a renewed strategy that takes into account the current needs of both countries. These include extending partnership in areas such as communications, culture and sports among others.
While acknowledging the cordial bilateral relations that subsist between our two countries, I am confident that these relations will deepen and broaden in future, now that our country has established a resident Diplomatic Mission in Berlin.
On a lighter note your Excellency, we shared in the pride of having our true friend, the Federal Republic of Germany lift the world cup this year. Your victory has been an inspiration to us as a nation and it has been victory for the rest of humanity in its effort to see our world united by sport.
Let me conclude by taking this opportunity to extend our sincere gratitude to the Government and people of Germany for their continued generous offers of assistance and wish you all a joyous occasion as we celebrate the German Unity Day.
Your Excellency, ladies and gentlemen, an occasion such as this one, deserves a united approbation. I would like therefore, to ask you to join me in raising our glasses as we toast to;
- The good health and happiness of His Excellency Mr. Joachim Gauck, President of the Federal Republic of Germany;
- To continued friendship and cooperation between our two countries and peoples and;
-To international peace and prosperity.
