Maswena silences Sankoyo

The ecstatic home crowd had expected victory but it was not to be. The game which was played under extreme temperatures started on a high note with both teams creating numerous scoring chances in the first 15 minutes. 

Notwane managed to attack the hosts in the early stages of the first half but its main undoing was finding the right pass to the attackers upfront. 

Notwane best chance came in the 11th minute when Emmanuel Masisi fired a shot but Sankoyo’s goalkeeper, Basimanebothe Moilwa managed to save. Sankoyo attacked mostly on the right through speedy winger Moreblessing Nyokanhete, who was a menace on Notwane defence. 

Sankoyo’s opener came in the 30th minute just shortly before the water break. Frederick Motukwa played a neat pass to Thato Monowe who outpaced his marker before delivering a dangerous cross. Notwane defender, Thabo Mbole scored an own goal in his attempt to clear the ball. The goal sent the fully packed crowd into a frenzy. 

Sankoyo thereafter created numerous chances but failed to score. Towards the end of the half, Sankoyo defender, Refilwe Senyane who was resolute against Emmanuel Masisi was taken out after picking up an injury. Morris Rozivo who scored against Extension Gunners and Township Rollers few weeks ago. The game went to half time break with Sankoyo leading 1-0.

In the second half, Sankoyo left where it started, launching more attacks. Ngurungu as the Maun based team is also popularly known dominated the first 20 minutes of the second half after which it was all Notwane until the game ended. Ngurungu best chance was when young midfielder Wabuya Ibe played a defence splitting pass to Jackson Lesole who failed to capitalize. 

Sankoyo was forced to make more two more changes following injuries to Motukwa and Nyokanhete. Motukwa’s departure left a gap in the midfield. Following the injuries Notwane coach made two substitutions, which completely changed the game. Notwane started running riot over the Sankoyo defence. The goal came in the 90th minute though the unmarked Lemogang Maswena who just passed in to the empty net after confusion in the Sankoyo defence.  Notwane coach Christopher Rabalago said that his boys had underrated Sankoyo. He said his players had thought they were going to have it easy hence the panic after Sankoyo’s early goal. Sankoyo coach, Philani Mabhena said that they are happy with a point despite the fact that they had wanted all the three points. He said their biggest undoing was losing three valuable players though injuries in the game, which left them exposed.
