Dolphins maintain unbeaten run

The win was Dolphins’ eighth straight victory this season and keeps them in joint top spot with Troopers who are also yet to lose.

Troopers also beat Cadets 61-45 on Friday night to ensure the two sides stayed neck on neck.

They now await their tie to decide who wins the league.

But it was Dolphins whose run seriously looked under threat before their game against the army side.

BDF had vowed to bring that run to a stop on Saturday and for the first two quarters they looked in total control.

Although both teams were offish on the night, the soldiers managed to surge forward and enjoy a seemingly healthy 10-point lead at half time.

They were up 28-18 at the end of the second quarter.

But they allowed their opponents to claw back into the game in the third quarter, thanks to some foul trouble.

In fact, BDF, who were already missing some of their players because of holiday duties, had to sit out their star player Michael Masilo because of foul trouble.

Masilo had to sit it out from mid second quarter to mid third quarter.

His absence affected them as they struggled to convert their chances upfront while their opponents took advantage of that setback.

At the end of the third quarter, Dolphins had cut the lead down to just a point.

They finished off the soldiers in the last quarter with a decent display as BDF had fizzled out.

In other matches, Drillers beat Botho University 80-67 while Botho’s ladies’ team forfeited points for their tie against BDF.

Botho did not honour that fixture and BDF were awarded maximum points on a 20-0 score line.

Meanwhile, Police V are just one win away from winning the league for the third consecutive season.

Police beat their bitter rivals BDF V ladies 65-35 on Friday night in another charged match.

BDF wrested the national title from Police last season after narrowly beating them.

Police will be eager for a repeat of last season’s final so they can revenge after that painful loss.

After Friday’s win they will be positive that they will reclaim the league title.

Police had to do without Dorothy ‘Dot’ Okatch who was away on her first international assignment as a FIBA-licenced referee.

Okatch officiated at the Africa Under 18 Women’s Championships in Cairo, Egypt. She is expected back in the country this week.
