KDC speeds loan collection rate

He said there was an increase in the rate of collection following the issuance of summons to the defaulters in January 2014 and that since the issuance of summons, arrears reduced from P664 ,829.95 in December 2013 to P628,194. 63 in June 2014. He said this reflected a reduction of P36,635. Mooketsi said that the recent suspension of issuance of summons to defaulters has however had a negative impact in their collection efforts.

He further said 12 villages already have operational committees, adding that issues of childcare are now reported and dealt with efficiently. Mooketsi added that there are currently 12 cases have been reported, which include matters of child abuse, adoption and child custody.

Mooketsi further said since 2009, KDC has managed to enroll 45 beneficiaries across the district of which nine are males and 36 females. The beneficiaries are engaged in various projects including, poultry farming, sewing, fine art, fruit trees, backyard vegetable garden, basketry, bakery, tuck-shop, and small stock and integrated farming.

“These projects are operational and six of them are managed by people living with disability”, he said. He further said council had already received funds amounting to P4,567,088 for alternative packages and that the funds are used for training of beneficiaries and procurement of equipment. He said 315 beneficiaries have been registered for alternative packages and out of these some have been trained for various packages such as bakery (33), hair salon (31), tent hire (57), catering  (43), laundry (23), sewing (20), kiosk (three), jam and pickles (5).

“Out of the 215 trained beneficiaries, 110 are engaged in 50 group projects which are currently operational, while a total of 105 beneficiaries are still awaiting delivery of their packages from suppliers and the remaining 100 beneficiaries are awaiting training,” he explained.  The District has assessed a further 287 beneficiaries who are awaiting training while assessment of 685 beneficiaries is ongoing. He said under Affirmative Action (AA) Kgomodiatshaba is the only Rural Area Dwellers Programme (RADP) settlement with a population of about 619 people.  He also said they have been implementing AA over the years in the areas go employment, housing and economic empowerment.

The cooperative shop had been directly awarded supply of food baskets to beneficiaries in Kgomodiatshaba, the bakery awarded tender for supply of bread to the schools of Kgomodiatshaba, Artesia, Dikgonnye and Leshibitse. He further informed the civic leaders that 15 beneficiaries have been provided with shelter in Kgomodiatshaba and that this financial year; KDC was allocated funds amounting to P200,000.

He also revealed that there are ten beneficiaries under the poverty eradication scheme. He said projects are thriving in the production and sales of tree nursery produce. Other poverty eradication packages such as landscaping and phane harvesting have not attracted any beneficiary.

Under the Youth Development Fund (YDF), 138 projects were funded to a tune of P12, 483,296 since inception of the programme. The programme, which ran from 2009/2010, created 247 employment opportunities. Mooketsi added that of the 138 projects funded, 10 had collapsed while 127 are still operational.
