She got to appreciate him more as husband and father as he guided the family through the hurly-burly of family life.

By so doing Mrs Saleshando was subtly emphasising the importance of spousal and family support, in a country where familial values are slowly being eroded.

“Here is a man who knows how to take care of a woman and her children.

You can be assured he will take care of the nation,” she said as she pledged to stand by her husband all the way in his political career. She made good on her word over the weekend, as she became the only potential first lady to participate in the presidential nomination process when she selected husband Dumelang Saleshando amidst ululations from the party faithful. BCP Director of elections Steven Makhura seconded her.

The other presidential nominees were Ian Khama of the Botswana Democratic Party, nominated by Party Chairman President Ponatshego Kedikilwe, while Secretary General Mpho Balopi seconded him.

The Botswana National Front Secretary General Tapiso Kgosikoma nominated The Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) president, Duma Boko. Aithoma Mokeresete seconded him. Boko and Saleshando are trying their chance at the presidency for the first time as Khama goes for his second and last term. He first went into state house in 2009, after taking over from former president Festus Mogae.
